Surgery experience
⚪ Training under the supervision of Dr. A K Gupta/Dr. Santhosh Joseph /Dr. T R Kapilamoorthy, Department of Imaging Sciences & Interventional Radiology, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Science and Technology, Trivandrum, India.
⚪ Training under the supervision of Dr. S K Hendique, Gauhati Neurological Research Centre, Gauhati, Assam.
In my residency in Radiology from 1997-2000, I had opportunity to work in Gauhati Neurological Research Centre, Gauhati, Assam. There I learnt the basics of Neuroimaging and diagnostic neuro angiography.
During my training period of DM Neuroradiology from 01/01/2001 to 31/12/2003 at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Science and Technology, I had been involved as the assistant and lead operator in the treatment and management of over 350 interventional cases with 150 cases as a lead operator and the rest as first assistant. This involved varied cases like Cerebral Aneurysm coiling, Cerebral AVM embolization, Dural AV Fistula and Caroticocavernous fistula embolization, balloon occlusion test before carotid sacrifice, WADA test for preoperative evaluation of epilepsy cases, carotid stenting, Spinal vascular malformation embolization/SDAVF, Preoperative embolization of tumour, Intracranial Angioplasty and stenting and Percutaneous Vertebroplasty. I performed more than 1500 diagnostic angiograms, which included cerebral angiograms, aortogram and spinal angiograms.
I was involved in the postoperative management of Interventional Neuroradiology patients during their admission in the High Dependency ward and intensive care units and in the general wards. I had also managed the Outpatient Department for Interventional Neuroradiology patients, taking consent from the patients and discussing the treatment options, procedure and prognosis with the patients and relatives. I have also taken active part in the weekly Neuroradiology meetings for selecting patients for Interventions and deciding the best possible treatment.
I also visited the National Institute for Mental Health and Neurological Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore during my training, where I got accustomed to various advanced neuroimaging modalities and neurointerventional procedures.
Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Science and Technology (http://www.sctimst.ac.in) is an Institute of National Importance in India for Neurosciences and Cardiology. It is a deemed university under Ministry of Science & Information Technology, Govt. of India. The department of Interventional Neuroradiology of the Institute performs about 300 neurointerventional cases per year.
⚪ Interventional Neuroradiology experience as Assistant Professor at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Science and Technology:
As an Assistant Professor in Neuroradiology from 2nd January 2004 – 28th February 2006, I have independently performed more than 200 Neurointerventional cases.
⚪ In AMRI Hospital and Medica Superspeciality Hospital, I performed around 1500 Neurointervention and vascular intervention (LCN + GE; Biplane Neuroangiography System, Philips Lab) procedures (aneurysm coiling, AVM embolization, carotid stenting, acute stroke treatment, vertebroplasty etc) from 1st March 2006 to December 2011. These institutes are tertiary care centres with advanced neurosciences facility and perform all conventional and advanced neurological surgery and has highly equipped Neurology department including stroke unit which in association with interventional Neuroradiology department regularly performs acute stroke thrombolysis.
⚪ In James Cook Hospital, UK, I performed all types of Neurointervention procedures, mainly aneurysm coiling in addition to diagnostic neuroradiological work.
⚪ In James Cook Hospital, UK, I performed all types of Neurointervention procedures, mainly aneurysm coiling in addition to diagnostic neuroradiological work.
⚪ Observership in Interventional Neuroradiology: I had 2 weeks of active observership in Interventional Neuroradiology (from 20th October – 1st November, 2008) at the Hacettepe University Hospital, Ankara, Turkey under Prof. Saruhan Cekirge and Prof. Isil Saatci. I refreshed all the advanced techniques of aneurysm treatment, AVM embolization with Onyx and intracranial and extracranial stenting procedures.
⚪ During my PLANET course, which was organised by Prof. Pierre Lasjaunias’s team, I had in-depth knowledge of functional neurovascular anatomy and interventional procedures.
⚪At Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata, I was working with 1.5T MRI & 3T MRI machine (Siemens), 68 slice CT and Siemens Flat panel Neuroangiography system with 3D and Dyna CT facility. We performed around 50 MRI, 30 CT per day and around 120 cathlab procedures per month (Diagnostic & Interventional procedures).
⚪Presently at Manipal Hospitals Mukundapur, I am working with 1.5 T MRI, 68 slice CT scan, Siemens Biplane Icono Neuro-angiography machine.
